Before Converting MKV to MP4: What is MKV

Matroska Multimedia Container is short for MKV. According to Wikipedia, MKV is an entirely open container format, that can hold unlimited audio, video, or subtitle tracks in a single .mkv file. Maybe just because it is too open, Adobe does not support MKV as the import and MKV it is not as widely supported as MP4.

MP4 is also a container format and it supports MPEG4, H.264, H.265, and the developing H.266. MKV supports those codecs too, making it possible to convert MKV to MP4 without losing quality. And, I’d like to recommend a decent video converting software for you to do so.

  1. I have a number of video files that I would like to convert from MKV to MP4. The majority of these are using the HEVC codec, and I am happy to preserve this in the destination MP4. Is it normal to see a conversion speed of 7-10 FPS? I do not have a GPU. I am on a Windows PC with an 8th gen Intel CPU.
